The Byron Society of America is pleased to support a special performance of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s The Cenci, presented by Red Bull Theater in partnership with the Keats-Shelley Association of America and the Keats-Shelley House in Rome.

Featuring a stellar cast with Blaize Adler-Ivanbrook, Amir Arison, Robert Cuccioli, Carol Halstead, Anthony Michael Lopez, Ella Loudon, Jason Sanchez, David Ryan Smith, Derek Smith, and Raphael Nash Thompson. This production also marks Red Bull Theater’s return to The Cenci nearly two decades after its acclaimed 2008 staging, also directed by Eleanor Holdridge.

Written in 1819 during Shelley’s years in Italy, The Cenci transforms the notorious story of Beatrice Cenci into a powerful tragedy of tyranny, resistance, justice, and the abuse of power. Set in Renaissance Rome, the play follows Beatrice as she confronts the brutal authority of her father and a series of institutions that fail to protect her. Shelley’s drama raises difficult and enduring questions about violence, moral responsibility, individual agency, and the possibility of justice when systems of power fail.

After the remarkable Red Bull performance of Byron’s Sardanapalus in 2024—which included over 100 global watch parties—the BSA is delighted to share that this performance is the official inauguration the Romantic Revivals Project, a new initiative dedicated to bringing the dramatic works of the Romantic period back into performance and public conversation.

The Romantic Revivals Project grows out of a longstanding collaboration among Red Bull Theater, scholars, students, and audiences devoted to exploring the theatrical possibilities of Romantic drama. Recognizing that works by writers such as Shelley and Byron belong not only on the page, but also in the theater, the BSA is proud to support this effort and bring Romantic drama to contemporary audiences who can participate in a broader revival of the period’s extraordinary theatrical heritage.

Join us in New York or from wherever you are. The performance will be presented live on November 5, with simulcast and on-demand viewing available online. The recording will remain available through November 15, making it possible for audiences around the world to experience Shelley’s tragedy together.
