Byron died at the age of the 36 in Messolonghi, in western Greece, where he had gone to aid the Greeks in resisting the Turkish occupation. His death in the Greek revolutionary cause made him a hero in that country. Messolonghi is now the home to the International Research Center for Lord Byron and Philhellenism, located in a modern recreation of Lord Byron’s House, depicted above.
The Messolonghi Byron Society of Greece hosts conferences on Byron for students and early-career scholars. Specific information can be found on their home page under “Conferences.” The BSA strongly supports the attendance of members and their students at the Messolonghi conferences, and gives travel grants to students for that purpose. Please contact us with any questions about how to get involved.
